Conserving Local Magnetic Helicity in Numerical Simulations

Abstract Magnetic helicity is robustly conserved in systems with very large magnetic Reynolds numbers, including most of astrophysical interest, and unlike kinetic energy, it not dissipated at small scales. This plays a major role suppressing the kinematic large-scale dynamo may also be responsible for driving through flux. Numerical simulations typically lack sufficient resolution to enforce global over several dynamical times. In these simulations, lost either numerical errors or action an unrealistically resistivity. Errors internal distribution are equally important larger. Here, we propose algorithm enforcing strict local conservation Coulomb gauge so that their evolution more closely approximates real systems.
